As much as I love SMB2, I expected it to come as part of Mario All-Stars Advance, or at least packaged with some extra "Lost Levels" from the Mario 2 universe. So why is the Game Boy Advance leading off with a retread of a NES game that still bears marks of its 8-bit roots? Did the fountain of creativity at Nintendo run low again? Was the easy money of a reissue too much for Nintendo to ignore? Was the pressure too much to make a new Mario, a game that by its lineage, was to be anticipated by fans as the next second-coming? No one knows that answer, and it haunts Super Mario Advance, a curious remake made even more curious by the lonely addition of the arcade Mario Bros and some sparse new details. All of these games were important - they set the standards for the system, showing how new technology inspired new creativity and visual wonder. With the possible exception of the Virtual Boy, every Nintendo system has launched with a brand new Super Mario game. This is NOT what anybody expected when they heard the name Super Mario Advance. Now that credit's given, it's time to be fair.

Not only did they bring over one of the most polished and creative platformers of the era, and not only did they essentially grant Mario a great cast of friends who would have otherwise fallen off into the background without some shared spotlight in this game, but they inadvertently gave Mario license to do whatever he wants, so long as it's fun. Whoever that was, give them a big hug from me.
